Really great atmosphere. I have never done any kind of martial art and everyone is completely welcoming and patient. I did my first full class last... night, and I am sore in places I forgot that I had - but it’s a good sore, and I can’t wait till Saturday when I can go again. Thanks. Now that I have been attending Fightworks since February of 2018, I’ve had a few people ask “why do you do Jiu Jitsu?” I’ve never really given a good answer to this. Originally, doing a martial art was just something I’d been mildly interested in since I was a kid, and never pulled the trigger on for one reason or another. When I reached my highest weight of 305 pounds, I knew that I needed to do something, so I started walking and watching what I was eating, but that only took me so far. Walking and lifting weights was boring to me, so I started to look into a few different martial arts. After looking into various types of martial arts, and ruling out the ones that included heavy take downs (I don’t like repeatedly falling down) I decided that I wanted to try Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, since it focused on fighting from the ground and Fightworks is also very focused on self-defense techniques. Once I started, in addition to finding out how out of shape I still was, I realized how defenseless I was. Even at 6’-2” and 270 pounds, I was destroyed by people half my size. I still have a very long way to go, but after several months of learning some of the different techniques and learning how to calm down in this new environment, I realized that also wanted to become dangerous. At least as dangerous as a +/- 50-year-old with a bad back can be. Sure, I am still sore in places, but it’s a good sore, one that has meaning. My back is still stiff most days, but at least now I can bend over at the waist without it going out for two weeks – I certainly don’t miss that. I am down to +/- 245 pounds and 6 inches smaller in the waist. I hope to continue my weight loss until I can compete again at the under 230-pound and up range, but if I don’t, that is ok too. My self-confidence is way up, stress at work and home are nothing compared to having large and very skillful people sitting on my chest and head or folding me into a pretzel. My life long struggle with my temper is gone, and my general stamina in all other areas is up dramatically. Plus, I am finally starting to feel like I am becoming at least somewhat “dangerous”, and more importantly, I feel completely able to control it. I don’t get nearly as upset in traffic if someone cuts me off like I did before. At home, I have become a much calmer, and I think a much better husband and father. I am also much less likely to get into a physical altercation, because I am very aware of what can happen – but at the same time, I feel much more capable of being able to defend myself or my family if I am forced to. This is the best thing I’ve ever done for myself.read more

The details of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu are remarkable and different from other schools I’ve trained at. Although high athleticism can go a long way, the... grips and angles taught in this school are a true game changer. The staff is welcoming, mats are always clean, and friendships continue off the mat as well. Great school!! 👍🏼🥋read more
